What is VoIP?
VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) refers to the transmission of audio over a data
network. The primary function of VoIP is to carry traditional telephone calls over
the internet.
Telephone calls can be made from a VoIP system to a traditional phone and vice versa,
or from one VoIP system to another.
A VoIP system in its' simplest form can be set up using software (Windows Live Messenger,
Skype, etc...) to utilise your computer's microphone & speakers, a headset,
or a USB phone handset. For the convenience of VoIP without the need for a computer
an Analogue telephone adaptor can be installed to make use of existing telephone
& fax hardware, or dedicated VoIP telephones can be plugged directly into an
existing router.
Of course, VoIP also lends itself to business voice applications
where multiple extensions and advanced features (such as Voicemail, Call on Hold,
Call Waiting, Call Divert, Internal Transfer, etc...) are required.
Why use VoIP?
VoIP offers many benefits to individuals & businesses alike, but the driving
factor behind the technology is its' ability to reduce telecom costs. The possibility
to route calls through different carriers &
medium depending upon time of
day and destination means that it is possible to ensure at least a proportion of
your calls are free. Calling packages are available with inclusive minutes, in much
the same way as a mobile phone tariff. Of particular interest to the business user
is the possibility to utilise multiple lines & numbers and advanced features
without the outlay for traditional PSTN lines and costly PBX hardware.
